Aim

Describe intersectoral collaboration for health improvement between an NPO and its primary health care partners in rural areas and identify factors that facilitate or hinder this collaboration.

Results

Fourteen factors were identified as having a significant impact on intersectoral collaboration with NPOs: co-location, level of shared vision, clarity of objectives/missions, level of interpersonal and interorganizational trust, quality of relationships between individuals and organizations, clarity of roles, responsibilities, and framework, quality of communication, quantity of human resources, level of implementation and planning capacity, level of knowledge and experience, competition between partners, quality of leadership (by senior managers), institutional and organizational context, and economic and social context (rural area). These factors were found to have both positive and negative effects on collaboration efforts. Several of these effects are also factors that, in turn, have an impact on collaboration.
The implementation of intersectoral collaborations requires, among other important factors, a shared vision, healthy relationships, and transparent and respectful communication. Our study provides rural health project managers with practical advice for addressing potential challenges and improving the effectiveness of their collaboration efforts.
